Rennes UH ranks among the top 10 public healthcare facilities* and provides a hospitalization capacity of 1,810 beds and accommodations in Brittany. With a total of 126,370 admissions and 492,080 consultations in 2015 (medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology), the establishment counts almost 106,220 emergency admissions. In 2015, 32,320 surgical interventions were performed, among which 283 with surgical robot assistance. 

Besides a broad range of clinical services covering the whole series of health needs, Rennes UH has a cutting-edge medico-technical equipment dedicated to diagnosis and interventional medicine.

Indeed, it provides primary and referral health care to Rennes and Brittany populations. In 2015, Rennes UH performed 293 organ transplantations (liver, kidney, cardiac and bone marrow transplantations). 8,400 professionals, among which 720 doctors, face the public health challenges every day and they are particularly focused on cancer field, cardiovascular diseases or elderly care at regional and inter-regional levels.  People come a long way to benefit from specialties such as cardiac surgery, neuro-surgery, neuroradiology, or for its rare diseases centres and its 22 competence centres (3 centres of reference – Developmental defects and malformation syndromes (clinical genetics) – Inherited iron overload (hepatology) – Spina bifida.

Rennes UH arrives 4th in national rankings for its attractiveness among interns*. It is staffed with 394 interns whereas 895 students in medicine, pharmacy and odontology are doing their internships there. 960 students in average are trained in 9 schools and training institutes for paramedical and maieutic professions each year. 

In terms of innovation and research, Rennes UH is structured into 12 joint research units; 2 university hospital federations (“cancer, microenvironment and innovation” and “innovative health technologies”) were labelled by AVIESAN in June 2014.

Advanced equipment are other examples of its excellence in terms of innovation such as:


  • Neurinfo – Imaging equipment to study the human brain function in a context of nervous system diseases
  • TherA-Image / TherA-Tech – Research and development platforms for therapies using implantable medical devices
  • a national platform in pharmaco-epidemiology PEPS, labelled by the National Health Products Safety Agency in September 2014,

Rennes’ teaching hospital has also been the first one to create an endowment fund, Nominoë, in November 2012 to support its policy in terms of innovation and research. It gathers 400 sponsors and the second project, the creation of a biobank, is being partly finalized thanks to them.
